Ethanol may also be familiar to some as a biofuel for cars. In its carbon-neutral production, plants are fermented in a natural process until 99.5% pure alcohol is produced. The simple and resource-efficient production of ethanol uses either plant biomass or the biodegradable components of waste.

Ethanol combustion is carbon-neutral, as the only carbon dioxide released in the process is that previously absorbed by the plant during photosynthesis.
